As he led the way to the bedroom, Albert tried to remember if there was anything he ought to try to kick under the bed or stuff in a drawer. He hoped not as the sitting room was barely big enough to give him a chance to think of it as he crossed to his bedroom, not nearly large enough for him to do anything about it. He glanced around the bedroom as he entered. Untidy, but nothing he needed to be unduly embarrassed about. The furniture was shabby, but no worse than the sitting room, and Colin had called that comfortable. The bed was unmade as Albert never saw the point of making it if he was just going to climb back into it at the end of the day and unmake it again, although now he was starting to doubt that philosophy. It was comfortable, though. Part of why he’d taken the rooms was the comfortable bed. He turned back the blankets to check for books but only found his bed socks, which he quickly tossed on the floor and hoped Colin hadn’t noticed, or had thought they were a spare pair of stockings, or didn’t think he was too much of an old man for wanting to keep his feet warm at night.

Albert felt Colin come up behind him. “If you’d rather I left...”

Albert froze. That was the last thing he wanted. “No, not at all. It’s just... I mean I’m not a very good housekeeper, and I just thought...”

“I see nothing wrong with your housekeeping,” Colin said softly, his breath brushing against Albert’s neck. “I don’t see anything wrong at all except that you seem nervous.” And then Albert felt Colin’s lips brush against his neck, warm and soft, just a light kiss above his collar, but enough to make Albert relax into his arms. It seemed that, as Albert’s nerves had increased, Colin’s had calmed. Albert considered that a victory, at least.

“Suddenly housekeeping doesn’t seem so important.”

“Good,” Colin whispered and ran his hands along Albert’s arms.

Albert wanted to feel those hands sliding along his skin, not through two layers of cloth. “There do seem to be too many clothes, though,” Albert murmured.

“Far too many,” Colin agreed and stepped back.

Albert turned and was pleased to see Colin hadn’t moved far, just a few steps back. And Colin was already pulling off his jacket and looking for somewhere to put it. Albert pulled the chair from its place by the window closer to Colin so he could use it for his clothes then started taking off his own. Jacket first, then waistcoat, then cravat. As he turned to put his cravat on the dresser, he could see Colin sit on the chair to remove his boots and stockings.

Albert quickly sat on the bed to see to his own boots. He was torn between pleasure at soon seeing all there was to see of Colin and the sinking dread that soon Colin would be seeing every scrawny inch of him.
